AKC

Postpones Increased Event Service Fee
Each time there is an event, secretaries send in their results for the AKC to record. A few weeks ago, the AKC announced an increase in these fees starting in October 2025. This week, they postponed the planned increase.

Legislative Alerts
A good way to stay on top of legislative actions in your state that affect dog training and ownership is to subscribe to AKC's Legislative Alerts. Alerts summarize the lissue and give you ways to contact government officials where you can share you views. You can sign up here.

Another organization focused on tracking and addressing legilative actions that can affect dog ownership is Sportsmen's Alliance. You can learn more about them here.

Breed Groups
If you've ever wondered how the AKC came up with the seven breed groups, you can learn more here.

The Genetic Basis for Hip Dysplasia
While a commercial, genetic test is not yet available, phenotypes, or observable trait through hip radiographs provide good insight. If you're a breeder, check out the AKC's recommended best practices here.

It's Happy Hour!

You've probably heard about the great interviews Pat Burns conducts with various field experts. He just had a great conversation with 20-year veteran Craig Crook of Autumn Run Retrievers. In this far-ranging conversation you can hear about:

  • How great dogs can look "average" at times
  • How It's easy to focus on the day's mistakes
  • The importance of judging effort and not just whether the work was done correctly; does the dog understand what you want or are they just not trying.

You can see the interview here.

As a Dog Thinketh

Recently Julie Kolberg shared excerpts from a book written by Monique Anstee. They are worth a read.
