A survey by Pets Best finds that “pet ownership boosts owner happiness.”
Here are the key findings:
- 83 percent of owners feel having a pet makes them a happier person (specifically, 86 percent of dog owners and 78 percent of cat owners)
- Owners spend, on average, 8.5 to 9.5 hours per day with their pet
- Younger generations experience the highest level of anxiety regarding pet care costs (specifically, 87 percent of gen Z owners and 85 percent of millennials)
More than 70 percent of US households include a pet, up significantly from before the pandemic.

Hookworms on the Rise
According to Veterinary Practice News, “hookworm cases rose by almost 50% across the country between 2015 and 2018. The reason may be an increase in drug resistance in the nematodes.”
The study found that the resistance was “to all three major classes of dewormers.” The article recommends using a combination of other drugs to treat the problem.
