BETTER CARE FOR ANIMALS ACT

The above proposed bill shift authority to the US Department of Justice from the US Department of Agriculture concerning dog breeder licensing. This shift would move oversight authority from an agency staffed by animal experts that focuses on improving animal husbandry, and instead place it with one little or no animal expertise that focuses on violations as potential federal crimes. 

The measure could potentially undermine or remove current exemptions from licensing for small hobby breeders, thereby requiring them to be licensed and comply with USDA standards.

ROLE OF NUTRITION IN WORKING DOGS

The AKC Detection Dog Task Force is sponsoring a presentation on the crucial role of nutrition in working dogs. 

Erin Beth Perry, MS, Ph.D. a professor of Equine & Canine Science at Southern Illinois University will present "An Overview of the Gut/Brain Axis and the Nutritional Impact on Cognition/Behavior.

HEALTH CERTIFICATIONS -- OFA

Did you know? Dogs must be 24 months or older for OFA Hip and Elbow certification, and 12 months or older for Cardiac, Patellas, and Thyroid certification. There is no age minimum for eye certification, nor for DNA, since DNA does not change as the dog ages.
The OFA also does Preliminary evaluations on hips and elbows before 24 months of age. However, they will need to be re-evaluated again for a final certification once the dog reaches 24 months.
